Steelers very solid — next man up

Pittsburgh beat Indianapolis 34–22. Jaylen Warren scored on an 80-yard catch-and-run and a 50-yard run (AP; PFT). The Steelers did it without Michael Pittman Jr. (WR), whom they placed on injured reserve on Saturday with a foot injury, so he must miss at least four games. Roman Wilson (WR) dislocated a finger trying to make a catch in the second quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the game, as was Ben Skowronek (calf). That left DK Metcalf, rookie Germie Bernard, Brandon Smith and Kaden Wetjen as the available receivers. Desk colour: very solid, and a very next-man-up mentality. Mendoza gets first reps; Patriots very slick

New England beat Las Vegas 45–17. With the game out of reach and about six minutes left, Klint Kubiak sat Kirk Cousins and brought in No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza for his first regular-season snaps. Mendoza went 6 of 8 for 48 yards on his one drive, which ended on a fourth-down scramble short of the marker. “Just wanted to get him some exposure,” Kubiak said. “He did a good job and all the reps are valuable.” Kubiak said the plan at quarterback does not change. Cousins was 19 of 28 for 243 yards and a touchdown. Desk colour: the Patriots were very slick. Sources: ESPN; Las Vegas Review-Journal; Raiders postgame quotes via Patriots.com.

Giants and Commanders tie

The game finished 27–27 after overtime, the NFL’s first tie of the season. Washington led 27–13 in the fourth quarter before Jameis Winston threw two 17-yard touchdowns, to Isaiah Likely and to Malik Nabers with 1:43 left. In overtime Daron Payne stripped Cam Skattebo with the Giants in range for a winning field goal. Washington then drove to the New York 24 with no timeouts left. They snapped the ball with 12 seconds remaining, and Jayden Daniels held it and went down for no gain with eight seconds left. Washington could not line up to spike it before the clock expired, which denied Drew Stevens a potential 42-yard winning kick. Daniels said the botched final play was “on me”, and Dan Quinn threw his headset down. Desk colour: it looks like the Commanders should have had another shot at winning, but poor clock management let them down. Sources: AP via ESPN; ESPN; NFL.com; CBS Sports.
